If I had a hammer...I'd hammer in the..(past Handyman efforts)
I've always been willing to "have a go" at Handyman or DIY efforts, and I recently got to thinking about what I'd have done along this line in the past, so I'm trying to make a list
Going as far back as school holidays in the 60's, I remember mum getting us (me and my brothers) to do up our bedroom. We (maybe me) choose wall paper with bright orange circles in a cool 60's pattern. It took us the whole three week school break and I learnt how to wallpaper back then
My next recollection was doing up a bathroom in the flat that my then girlfriend, Keri, and I lived in. This would have been in the mid 70's. The flat was an old place in Barbados Street, ChCh, and I remember extremely high ceilings, a claw footed cast iron bath and exposed pipes. I foolishly choose a rich dark green enamel paint with a blood red contrast for the window frames. It was cold and horrible and when the landlord saw it, he made us repaint it white, which was really hard to cover up the green and red.
When I married Keri, we eventually built our own place in 1979 (since destroyed by the ChCh earthquakes) along side the Avon river. As it was a new place, I recalled painting all the chip board floors with a clear Polyurethane sealer. I was working a nightshift job so I did this over a week long period during the day before biking off to town and work.
Once we were in the new house, we needed paths and so Dad and I mixed our own concrete and made paths around the house. It was during this time that we also built a front fence and a gate.
Keri and I eventually broke up and I moved out of the house.
My next attempt at interior decorating was several years later 1983ish when I moved into a small one-bedroom place in Edgeware. I painted the walls and cleaned up the floorboards. I choose simple plain colours (a pale purple pink and white windows frames I think) Anyway, it was clean and tidy and eventually I was able to bring Dee into it for a lasagna dinner, and she eventually married me.
I don't recall any other DIY efforts until Dee and I had moved over to Melbourne. While living in Newport, (1990) I replaced the flooring in the rented place using cork tiling. It required a fair bit of work, with new sheets of hardboard, the cork tiles glued down, and again everything was polyurathaned to seal and protect it.
Dee and I then built Niagara Way out in Werribee, and my DIY efforts took on an internal focus.
We added an extension professionally, but I was going to paint it inside and out. I managed the outside, but didnt complete the inside for many years....then we sold it. end of story
We are now in a new house and it needs landscaping, which I plan to use concrete...because I can now.. see next blog
